Speech Sounds, Oral Motor Challenges & Articulation
What does it mean?
No matter the age, everyone deserves to be understood and heard. Intelligibility is a huge part of effective communication and gives people a first impression.
Kefi specializes in articulation and phonological disorders/delays in children including childhood apraxia of speech, orofacial myofunctional disorders (e.g., tongue thrust, tongue tie), and other motor speech disorders resulting from a variety of etiologies.
Therapeutic Interventions
Alexandra is a PROMPT trained therapist and has significant success working on difficult sounds including /r/!
Techniques used in therapy increase awareness of the target sound and provide feedback about placement and movement of your child’s mouth, tongue, lips and voice. To do this we may use the following:
- Using a mirror for visual feedback
- Using gestural cueing to support correct placement and production
- Providing tactile/touch feedback on correct tongue placement and coordination
- Amplifying target sounds to improve attention, reduce distractibility, and increase sound awareness and discrimination
