What is Orton Gillingham?
The Orton-Gillingham approach, developed by neuropsychiatrist Samuel Torrey Orton and educator Anna Gillingham, is a highly effective teaching method for individuals struggling with reading, writing, and spelling. Originally designed for children with dyslexia, its individualized techniques are suitable for learners of all ages and skill levels and can support students who are experiencing gaps in foundational literacy skills or need additional support in a particular area. This method uses multisensory techniques involving auditory, visual, sensory, and kinesthetic elements to help students connect language with letters and words, enhancing their reading abilities.
Orton-Gillingham uses a multisensory, systematic approach to teach reading. Sessions are action-oriented and use auditory, visual, sensory, and kinesthetic (touch) elements to help students establish the connection between language and letters or words to improve reading skills. This structured, step-by-step approach focuses on the unique needs of each student, with lessons tailored to their current skill level. By modeling how to utilize sight, hearing, touch, and movement to assist in the reading process, students learn to become more successful readers. Our Orton-Gillingham tutors prioritize the individual needs of each student, using diagnostic and prescriptive lessons to monitor progress and address areas of concern.
We offer Orton-Gillingham in Manhattan and Brooklyn and collaborate with other literacy based professionals, such as speech-language therapists & literacy interventionalist, to ensure your child gets the holistic support they deserve to make reading a successful and enjoyable experience.
