Auditory Processing Treatment
Three treatment approaches are typically incorporated into treatment when working on auditory processing. They include:
Direct Skills Remediation
Target multiple skills associated with understanding and interpreting auditory information:
- Discriminating between sounds
- Recognizing similarities and differences between sounds
- Identifying location of sounds
- Focusing on auditory information with background noise
- Distinguishing auditory information when two sounds are presented at the same time
Compensatory Strategies
We work to minimize the impact of challenges on language, cognition and academics by enhancing other skills to support understanding, communication and learning. Strategies include metalinguistic and metacognitive strategies including:
- Graphic organizers
- Context to build vocabulary
- Expanding semantic network
- Active listening skills
- Memory techniques
- Assertiveness training
- Problem solving
- Organizational skills
- Schema induction
- Discourse cohesion devices
Environmental Modifications
Changing the learning or communication environment to improve listening and understanding across settings by:
- Improving the auditory signal ( using an FM devices)
- Reducing competing sound
- Strategic placement or seating
- Using acoustic dividers
- Covering reflective surfaces to reduce reverberation
